2026 Volkswagen Transporter T7 Review: Is It Still a True Transporter… or Something New?

2026 Volkswagen Transporter T7 Review: Is It Still a True Transporter… or Something New?
News

The arrival of the new Volkswagen Transporter marks one of the biggest shifts in the model’s history — and for many van buyers, one question comes first:

Is this still really a Volkswagen Transporter?

With the seventh-generation T7, Volkswagen has taken the iconic Transporter in a bold new direction. This isn’t a mild evolution of the T6.1 — it’s a complete rethink of what the Transporter can be.

A New Era for the Transporter

For the first time, the T7 is built on a shared platform with the Ford Transit Custom — widely regarded as one of the best van platforms on the market.

That may raise eyebrows among traditionalists, but the result is far from a badge-engineered copy. Volkswagen has put its own stamp on the vehicle with distinct styling, a premium cabin, and an ownership proposition designed around business users.

The outcome? A van that feels familiar in spirit, but very different in execution.

Sharper Looks, Premium Feel

The first impression is unmistakable — the T7 looks more modern, more refined and more premium.

A redesigned front end – updated rear styling and sharper lines bring it closer in feel to Volkswagen’s passenger vehicle range than a traditional panel van.
This no longer feels like just a workhorse. It feels like a van designed to be lived with every day.

Interior Designed Around Real Use

Inside is where the biggest leap forward is found.
The cabin feels more car-like, with improved ergonomics, a cleaner dashboard layout and a larger infotainment screen, while still keeping physical controls where they matter — something operators will appreciate.

A flat floor across the front also improves usability, allowing genuine three-seat practicality and easier movement across the cab.
It’s smarter, but still functional.

Powertrains for the Future

The T7 offers multiple 2.0-litre diesel power outputs, with manual and automatic transmissions available, plus four-wheel drive on selected models.
But perhaps the biggest development is electrification.

For the first time, fully electric Transporter models join the range, offering up to around 225 miles of range, with hybrid options expected too.
Whether your business runs on diesel or is moving toward EV, the T7 is built with both in mind.

How Does It Drive?

On the road, the changes are immediately noticeable.
Steering feels lighter, refinement is improved, and the overall drive is smoother and more composed — much closer to a passenger vehicle than many would expect from a van.
And that matters.
Because for operators spending long hours behind the wheel, comfort and ease of use matter just as much as payload.

Still Practical Where It Counts

For all the changes, it remains a Transporter at heart.
In fact, practicality has improved.
There’s more room between the wheel arches, increased load capacity and payloads of up to around 1.2–1.3 tonnes depending on specification.
For working users, it may be more capable than ever.

Safety and Technology Step Up

Driver assistance and safety systems have moved on significantly too, with the T7 offering a level of protection and technology far beyond previous generations.
For fleets and business owners alike, that’s a major plus.

Our Verdict

So — is it still a true Transporter?

Yes… but a very different one.

The new T7 may move away from some of the old-school character of earlier generations, but in return it delivers more comfort, more technology, more flexibility and arguably a stronger proposition for modern businesses.

From a commercial point of view, it makes more sense than ever.

And right now, it may be one of the most complete vans on the market.
