David Spear Commercial Vehicles is proud to celebrate a fantastic achievement in grassroots sport, as Nelson RFC Under-12s were crowned Dragons Cup champions following an impressive victory over Oakdale U12s at Rodney Parade on Sunday 17th May.

Playing on one of Welsh rugby’s most iconic stages, Nelson delivered a superb all-round team performance, securing a memorable 28–12 victory and lifting the Dragons Cup trophy in front of proud families, coaches, supporters and the wider rugby community.

The achievement held particular significance for David Spear Director Geraint Yeo, whose connection with Nelson RFC runs far deeper than sponsorship alone. With his son Jacob previously part of the squad and Geraint having coached many of the players throughout their early rugby journey, the occasion represented years of commitment, development and community spirit coming full circle.

Reflecting on the achievement, Geraint said:

“Watching the boys lift the Dragons Cup was a genuinely proud moment — both as a dad and as someone who has been fortunate enough to be part of their journey over many years. Success at this level is about much more than winning trophies. It’s about friendships, commitment, teamwork and seeing young people grow in confidence and character.”
“At David Spear, we understand the importance of community and the role grassroots rugby plays in bringing people together. Local clubs create opportunities, develop life skills and build lasting memories. We’re fortunate to be able to support organisations like Nelson RFC and seeing these young players achieve something special makes that support even more meaningful.”

Geraint coached the group from Under-6s through to Under-11s and has watched many of the players develop both on and off the pitch.

He added:

“I coached this team from U6s through to U11s before Jacob decided it was probably time for me to retire — for obvious reasons! To watch the players continue their journey and now achieve something like this is incredibly rewarding. Seeing them develop into a close-knit team and enjoy moments like this is what grassroots sport is all about.”

Led by Head Coach Mathew Williams and Captain Blu Williams, Nelson demonstrated determination, skill and togetherness throughout the competition and rose to the occasion in the final against a strong Oakdale side.

For everyone connected with Nelson RFC, this victory represents far more than success on the scoreboard. It is a celebration of the coaches, volunteers, parents and supporters who dedicate countless hours behind the scenes to create opportunities and experiences for young people.

At David Spear, supporting local communities has always been a key part of the company’s values, and moments like these serve as a reminder of the positive impact grassroots sport can have in developing resilience, confidence and lifelong memories.

Congratulations to Nelson Under-12s on a tremendous achievement and a Dragons Cup victory that everyone connected with the club can be immensely proud of. 🏉🏆
