Father and Daughter Team Show the Power of Local Jobs and Skills at David Spear Commercials
News

At David Spear Commercials, our people are at the heart of everything we do — and few stories capture that better than the journey of Darren and Layla Price, a father and daughter team working side by side in our bodyshop.

Darren joined David Spear Commercials four years ago as our Head Paint and Bodyshop Technician, bringing with him a reputation as a highly skilled painter and panel beater, well known across the local area for his craftsmanship and attention to detail. From day one, Darren set the standard for quality within the bodyshop and quickly became an integral part of the business.

Two years later, that story took on an even more meaningful dimension when Darren’s daughter, Layla, joined the business — following in her father’s footsteps and beginning her own career in the motor industry.

Creating Opportunities Through Apprenticeships

Layla joined David Spear Commercials as part of a job-creation apprenticeship scheme and is now an Apprentice Paint and Bodyshop Technician. She combines hands-on experience on site with formal learning through the Merthyr College Apprenticeship Scheme, attending college one day a week as part of a three-year programme.

Already a permanent employee, Layla is working towards graded certification in paint and panel beating, developing her skills alongside experienced colleagues — including her dad.

Creating Careers, Not Just Jobs

Geraint Yeo, Director at David Spear Commercials, said:

“At David Spear Commercials we have been creating local jobs for local people for nearly 40 years. We firmly believe in creating wealth within the local area by investing in people, skills and long-term employment opportunities. Darren and Layla’s story is a brilliant example of how that commitment comes to life.
“Both Darren and Layla bring a unique skill set to their day-to-day roles. As a father and daughter team, they strive for perfection, which reflects the high standards associated with the David Spear brand. They are an integral part of our business model, and I have no doubt Layla will succeed in her apprenticeship with high honours.”

Learning, Pride and the Next Generation

For Darren, working alongside his daughter has been a proud moment:

“I couldn’t be prouder of Layla and what she’s achieved so far. She’s doing remarkably well and taking everything in her stride.”

Layla added:

“It’s a great opportunity. I really love the apprenticeship and having the chance to go to college one day a week, while learning on site under the supervision of my dad. I’m enjoying every part of it.”

Looking Ahead

This story also reflects the wider direction of the business following David Spear Commercials’ transition to an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT) last year. The move reinforced our long-term commitment to continued investment in the business and, most importantly, our people — ensuring skills development, opportunity and local job creation remain central to our future.

Stories like Darren and Layla’s remind us that investing in people doesn’t just build businesses — it builds futures.
