Earlier this year, rally legend Nicky Grist appeared on the David Spear Podcast, sharing stories from his world-class motorsport career and his passion for bringing high-profile rally events to Wales. That powerful conversation laid the groundwork for a meaningful collaboration—one that came to life in spectacular fashion at this year’s Nicky Grist Stages Rally, where David Spear Commercial Vehicles proudly served as the official vehicle partner.
When Nicky reached out for support ahead of the rally, the David Spear team was ready. With shared values of performance, teamwork, and commitment to community, it was a natural fit.
“It was a pleasure having Nicky on our podcast earlier this year. His drive, focus, and passion for motorsport really resonated with us,” said David Spear, Founder of David Spear Commercial Vehicles.
“So, when the chance came to support the rally, we didn’t hesitate. It’s an event that brings people together, shines a light on Wales, and reflects many of the principles we believe in as a business.”
To support the event, David Spear Commercial Vehicles supplied two high-spec Ford Ranger Wildtrak pickups—one for the Motorsport UK Safety Delegate, and the other as the official Double Zero (00) safety car. Designed for power and capability, the Wildtraks were ideal for navigating the tough terrain of the Welsh countryside while playing a vital role in rally safety operations.
Held in and around Builth Wells, the rally was expertly organised by Quinton Motor Club, with Neil Cross serving as Clerk of the Course.
The event attracted thousands of spectators and brought a welcome boost to the Powys and Carmarthenshire region. The event was delivered with the support of Powys County Council, Carmarthenshire County Council, and Builth Wells Town Council, whose coordination ensured everything ran smoothly both on and off the stages.
On the ground, the David Spear team experienced the event in full—meeting fans, drivers, and marshals while seeing their vehicles in action at the heart of the competition.
“It was a proud moment seeing our vehicles trusted by Motorsport UK and performing faultlessly under pressure,” David added.
“Being part of something that brings energy and pride to the local area, especially in the kind of heat we had on the day, was incredibly rewarding.”
The event was won by William Creighton, with Meirion Evans securing second place as part of the Melvyn Evans Motorsport team, both driving Toyota GR Yaris Rally2 cars. Matthew Hirst finished third overall but notably claimed victory in both the BTRDA and Welsh Championship categories as the highest-placed driver eligible for those series.
“In these exceptionally hot conditions, everyone’s a winner,” said Nicky Grist. “The crews, officials, marshals—and supporters like David Spear and his team—were all instrumental in making this year’s rally such a great success.”
With a growing connection to the motorsport community and a long-standing commitment to delivering quality, performance, and reliability, David Spear Commercial Vehicles looks forward to continuing its partnership with Nicky Grist and future Welsh motorsport events.
